How do you rally an entire team to live purpose – in the moment?

Medibank

For too many organisations today, diversity and inclusion is still seen as a feel-good, box ticking exercise. But to further live its purpose, ‘Better health for better lives’, health and wellness insurer Medibank needed to walk the talk with its employees, not just customers.

Already a recognised equal-opportunity employer, Medibank saw the bigger impact of addressing one of the most overlooked areas of discrimination at the time: Unconscious bias. Through a strengthened culture of care that empowered employees to better accept and respect each other regardless of gender, sexual preference, ways of working, disability or culture, its employees would feel better taken care of and ultimately – take better care of customers, too.

Challenging unconscious bias: A conversation we can all be part of.

To create sustainable change within Medibank’s culture, we first needed to drive education and awareness of unconscious bias so that employees could recognise it. Then, we needed to inspire them with the courage to challenge it in the moment.

Through two raw and emotive films, our cast of real Medibank employees shared their deeply personal stories around prejudice at work, and and created an open dialogue with viewers by challenging them to call out bias when we see it. We then turned conversation into change by driving accountability – from the top. With the films premiering at Medibank’s Leadership Conference, leaders made personal commitments to creating a workplace where people are free to be themselves, and to speak up against bias in the moment.

The ROI on relevance

Although originally intended for internal leadership training, the films were so impactful that Medibank
shared them externally:
